This is stylised Cold War espionage in a modern setting, and it’s very satisfying viewing

Gary Oldman plays the typical crusty old grouch, an MI5 spy left over from the Cold War (and outcast at Slough House), who still dodges the shadows and sees real threats before anyone else.

Another well-crafted show that creates its immediate world with details of setting, character (and subterfuge), the indispensable building blocks of good storytelling

If you’re new to this show, now that season 2 is out, you should do yourself a favor and watch season 1 first – it’s a great story and will offer a depth of characters and situations that will increase your enjoyment.

Highly recommended – Oldman and Kristin Scott-Thomas are fantastic, as are Jack Lowden and Saskia Reeves

Season 2 seems to have upped the ante in terms of production design and cinematography – it really paid off and elevated the show above your average weekly episodic TV.
